Some of the most magical things happen in the middle of the night. So my kid, at one month, looked directly at me at one point and kind of cooed. It was this recognition, like “Oh, you’re my mom.” I’d like to think that when I’m dying I’ll remember that because it was really wild and if you don’t have religious instincts, which unfortunately, I don’t, I was born with out them, that is the closest I’m going to come to awe. So even in my depressive, sleep deprived, hysterical, Looney Tunes state, I remember thinking that was just the bomb—that was magic.
